Media and Press Kits

Author’s Basic Guide to Book Media and Press Kits

If you are going to market and promote your book on your own,  you’ll need to create a media or press kit. There is a small difference between the two.

A Media Kit is used to provide information to  bloggers and reviewers with general information about your book. It can be used during blog tours or with a reviewer who needs the book’s information.

A Press Kit is used for news media, journalists, magazines. This is used for book launches and events. A Press Kit will include the same items in the media kit, but will have a little more and focused on getting media attention. You could even take this further and have an Electronic Press Kit, which is on a webpage and downloadable.

Whatever the use, a media or press kit is key to any marketing plan.

Media and Press Kits

A MEDIA KIT will include:

Basic Book Information:

Title

Author name

Genre

Release date

Total page numbers

ISBN/ASIN

Book links

Book blurb

Book excerpt (approved by your publisher)

Author bio

Author links

Attached book image and author photo.

A PRESS KIT will include:

Basic Book Information:

All the regular information provided in the media kit, but it’s very important to have the book blurb, author bio and contact information.

Press Release: A one-page article that announces the publication of your book. This is what is normally sent to media outlets in hopes of them picking up your story. Here is a sample press release. (Another blog post on this alone will come later.)

Photographs: Include a clear book cover that the media could use as well as an author picture. You want the photograph to be professional (not a selfie) and grab attention.

Book Specifics:  A sample chapter (usually the first),  and quotes from reviewers.

Other possibilities include: Author Q&A, links to book trailers, award information, testimonials.

To make this an EPK, just have the press kit available on your website or downloadable.
